My brother spreads the Plague

From: Plague Detected in Colorado Springs

Plague is a bacterial disease of rodents transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected flea. In humans the symptoms are high fever, chills, headache, severe prostration, and tender or swollen lymph glands. Health Department advises residents who experience these symptoms to contact their physician.

It seems strange that at the same time that my brother went to Colorado Springs, the Black Plague showed up there. Coincidence? I think not.

A True Superhero

He was our hero when we were kids. He could fly. He had X-Ray Vision. He was bulletproof.
And then he showed us what Hero really means. Now, although he couldn't walk, he carried himself higher than he'd ever flown. He believed that he would walk again, and that it wouldn't take the superpowers to get there. He believed that regular people can acomplish what they put their mind to. Christopher Reeve truly was a Super Hero.Superman

Veep Debate

Well... John Edwards got his ass handed to him. No two ways about it. He didn't seem to have a thought of his own, everything was Kerry this and Kerry that. Even when asked what qualified him to be "a heartbeat away" he didn't have an answer that didn't involve Kerry. So far we've got the Hollow Man and his Shadow versus The Boy Blunder and someone who might have a clue.

Theme Rotator Project No 1

I've got this idea you see. It's a great idea, shining away inside my head. It will make this the coolest site I've ever built... and then some.
But...
(and there's always a but...)
I'm not sure if I'm even close to having the skills needed to implement this.
Here's the idea:
I've got my title bar above, with an image (currently SpaceShipOne) Then I've tried to match the site colors to the image, which is pretty easy with CSS. I just open my CSS file in a text editor, do a search and replace for the various colors, and it's done. Easy as pie. However, that leaves my Generated Title Images in the old colors. Lame, so then I either have to ignore the uglyness, or edit that file with the new colors. Then, my category images (which are not generated) are the wrong colors too. So I actually have to replace all of those images, or, again, ignore the ugly. (Any other static, decorative images at this page need fixing too at this point).
Changing colors is turning into quite the project.
But, suppose it was easier... what if I could update the colors for the CSS, the title generator, the categories, and maybe even a few other things by editing one set of variables. Now that would be mega-sweet.
Not satisfied with this project however, I thought to myself... what if, not only was it easy to change the colors, what if it were automatic? So when I change the title bar image, it changes the site colors in a complementary way?
How sweet would that be? That's right ultra-sweet.
So, I'm working on part A... automating color changes. So with one fell swoop I can re-color the whole site. This involves re-writing my title generator a bit, converting my CSS to PHP, and making the category images dynamically generated.
Once that's working right, I'll have to make a few different themes for testing the whole process. Then I'll have to set up a database to match images to themes. Then, grandest of all, I'll have to set up the site to put this all together when you come visit. A new theme every day perhaps? That would be ultra-mega-sweet.
You know it.

Debate?

So the press-conference debate last night was interesting. My opinions on both candidates seems to remain un-affected though. I'll summarize:
Kerry: Bush misled us, Iraq is not connected to 9-11, our allies hate us, it's all Bush's fault, I'll do something that's better. 90% of cost, 90% of casualties.
Bush: Um... Kerry is inconsistent, he voted for war, now he says it was a mistake, he belittles our allies, Don't change horses in midstream. Stay the course.
repeat with minor variations for 90 minutes.
The way I see it, Kerry keeps saying he has plans, and he'll do better without ever saying how. Bush says Saddam needed to be removed and we did.
I've seen people critisizing the one-track nature of the debate, but that was because of the "rules" imposed by the Candidates. Hopefully they will cover topics other than the ones they've been spouting about since day one of this campaign in the future debates.
In the end, it seemed to me that Bush is a fairly bad public speaker. He has trouble getting his words out. But he does, in fact say exactly what he means to say, mispronunciations aside. (Like you've never mispronounced anything, especially with millions of people watching.) What he says is very narrow in scope and very self-serving, but then, this is a campaign, that's what he wants.
Kerry, on the other hand was very polished, always finished in the last five seconds, never stuttered, never stalled, never got excited. It kind of creeped me out.
In a conversation with someone on-line they mentioned that "Bush is a loose cannon" and I responded:
At least if you know a cannon is loose, you know to stay clear and start trying to tie it down. With Kerry, I don't know if the cannon's loose, loaded or a stage prop.
Oh well...

Public Transit

Are there any resources with information, resources, forums, or even ideas about infants on public transit?
I don't drive unless I absolutely have to, and when The Pickle gets here, I don't expect to change that. However, I'm concerned, mostly, about protecting his hearing. Those trains can be loud (busses too) and I don't want to screw up his hearing. We'll let him do that on his own when he gets into his teenage-rock-n-roll years. Also I have questions like, is the train better than the bus? If he lets go with the full-diaper special, do I get off and change it right away, or ride it out to our destination.
It's complicated. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
