Thumbnails

I've updated my photo display at the top of the page. This is another step for moving from Gallery to Pictorialis. I still need to link the thumbnails to their images and then, once I've moved the pics, limit the thumbnails to the "Blog" category. Thanks to Jesuit and unteins in #wordpress

Update 6-23:
Image linking is done!

Who is John Galt?

Court: No Right to Keep Name From Police

A sharply divided Supreme Court ruled Monday that people who refuse to give their names to police can be arrested, even if they've done nothing wrong.

So, here's a hypothetical question...
What if, as an act of civil disobediance, people, when asked their name, simply lied? If they are not being charged and not giving information regarding a crime, are they under any legal obligation to tell the truth? What if as a group, those inclined to civil disobedience in this matter, chose a name that everyone would use when asked their name? Having just read Atlas Shrugged, John Galt comes to mind. Then perhaps you really would have people in the streets asking "Who is John Galt?"
Would doing this change the matter from a 4th and 5th Amendment issue to a 1st Amendment issue?
So many questions...

...And Dad

Yesterday was Father's Day. What did you do for your father. If you're like most people (myself included) you put maybe half as much thought and effort into Father's Day as you do for Mother's Day. Did you ever wonder why this is? I have some theories. Yes, Mothers are more important for the first few months of life. and the raising and nurturing responsibilities frequently fall more to the Mother than the Father. Additionally, at least in this country, the courts are more inclined to put children with the mother in cases of seperation.
None of these really apply in my case though.
You see... my father is my hero.
I have other heros, but the standard by which they are measured is my father. And you'd think that it wouldn't be an incredibly difficult standard to live up to, since I have no illusions about the fact that my father is human and not infallable. But that's not true. The flaws he has had, he has worked hard to repair. He thirsts to learn and grow, mentally, and spiritually... all the time.
And he passed that gift to me. Here are just a few of the things that my father taught me, that I think define my character:

  • The most important question is "Why?"
  • Don't trust anyone who can't answer that question.
  • If you don't get an answer you like, go find your own answer.
  • Books are better than TV, Video Games, Movies or just about anything else.
  • You can learn as much from fiction as from non-fiction
  • It's never too late to rethink your philosophy.
  • You should rethink your philosophy frequently.
  • An unquestioned, unexamined belief is not worth holding
  • Questioning is good for faith
  • Real bikes and real boats don't need motors
  • Anything worth doing, is worth doing right. (yeah, it's kind of a cliche, but hey... it's true)
  • Stupidity should not be rewarded
  • A smart kid is a pain in the ass... two is worse.
  • It's a good pain in the ass
  • In any situation, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle
  • That doesn't mean there are no absolutes
  • Finding the truth is worth the hard work
  • Try new things, you never know what you'll love.
  • Men should say "I love you."

There's much I could say about my father, and the list above could go on for weeks. But the best tribute I can pay him is to say... soon I'll be a father. My goal is to be as good a father as he is. If I can acheive this, I think my kids will turn out great.
I love you Dad.

FeedBurner

So, I've replaced the link for RSS feed on this page (and the photo one too) with the link from FeedBurner. Their service seems really nice. makes the page you get when you click on the feed link look better and offers the feed in several formats it seems. It also gives a little more control, which I like. I've spent a lot of time on the design of this site, and it's important to me. So I want people to actually come to the site as opposed to just reading it in an aggregator. Hopefully you will.

Pictorialis II

I'm working on replacing Gallery on my site. Mostly because of the way Gallery constructs the albums, it is nearly impossible to fit it into this site in a way I like, and for this site, at least, I'd like to get everything W3C compliant. It's not there yet, but I'm working on it. I like gallery and will probably use it on other sites. But it's not what I want for this site.
So I'm going with PictorialisII by Mark Ghosh. The reasons for this are:

  • It's built on WordPress, which I've been messing with, so I've got a better grasp of the code than I do with anything else.
  • I talk to Mark regularly on #WordPress on IRC, so when I have a problem, or a suggestion, I can get help with it.
  • It seems to do the job
It's now linked to the right under "Photos" where "Gallery" used to be. Until I get all of the pictures moved, Gallery will still be at its old URI. I've still got some things I need to do with Pictorialis before I consider it done.
  • Update the photo section on the Blog page to work with Pictorialis
  • Use album names in permalinks
  • Function to re-generate thumbnails? (some of the random thumbnails are a bit ugly)
  • Captions for individual photos

But on the whole, I'm very happy with it.
